Rs 1 M reward for info on cop killers

The police have offered a cash reward of Rs 1 million for information leading to the arrest of those involved in the killing of a traffic police constable and causing injury to another, in Kurunegala.


Police have requested the general public, if they have any information, to convey it to the SSP of Kurunegala.
Two police constables attached to the Kurunegala Police, who were on traffic duty on the Kurunegala-Dambulla main road, were abducted by an unidentified gang, returning in a van after committing a robbery, in the wee hours of yesterday.


One police constable was found dead and the other officer, who was in an unconscious state, was admitted to the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital.
According to Police Media Spokesperson, SSP Ajith Rohana, the van was approaching from Dambulla and was stopped by the constables, who had apparently questioned the persons in the van and had requested for the driving licence.


The occupants had then abducted the policemen, shot them and dumped them in the Bandagamuwa Forest after stripping them naked. SSP Rohana said, "A special police team has been deployed to apprehend the killers." Inspector General of Police (IGP), N.K. Illangakoon, took a decision yesterday morning to send a special police team to conduct investigations into the incident."
The SSP added, "So far, a statement has not been recorded due the main witness, police constable Wijesuriya 34098, still receiving treatment at the Kurunegala Hospital.


"The IGP has recommended that Constable 41497, Chandana Sampath of the Kurunegala Police, be promoted to the rank of police sergeant for his valiant efforts while on duty," he said adding the incident has been classified as a brutal murder and perpetrators would be dealt with within the perimeters of the law.
Some 148 policemen had been killed or assaulted while on duty from last June to date.
