As if New York City’s elections couldn’t get any weirder, Kristin Davis, the libertarian candidate for city comptroller and the “Manhattan Madam” who had Eliot Spitzer as a customer, was arrested yesterday on charges of selling prescription drugs.
“As alleged, Kristin Davis sold dangerous and highly addictive prescription pills to a known drug dealer on repeated occasions in exchange for cash,” Manhattan U.S. attorney Preet Bharara said in a statement.
FBI assistant director in charge George Venizelos explained that Davis sold the drugs “not once, but rather four different times in four months to an FBI cooperating witness,” adding up to hundreds of pills sold from January to April of this year.
Davis, who claims she supplied prostitutes to disgraced former New York governor Eliot Spitzer, who is also running for city comptroller, has been charged with four counts of distributing and possessing with intent to distribute a controlled substance; each charge carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. She has a previous stint in jail dating from her defunct escort service, which she served out at Rikers Island; Davis has argued that she’s paid her debt to society while Spitzer has not.
Charles Cooke interviewed Davis for NRO about her candidacy recently — her qualifications for the comptroller job turn out to be surprisingly impressive, but today’s news seems likely to get in the way of her candidacy.
The FBI assistant director in charge concluded, “This type of criminal activity is illegal for citizens, and is especially unbecoming for a person seeking public office in the City of New York.”
Oh, I don’t know. At this point, it’s kind of par for the course.
